World Languages Placement Guidelines
It is to the advantage of these students to be correctly placed in a course, to their benefit, so they can excel to the AP classes much faster than when placed in a regular class.
Why Place Heritage Students in Spanish Speakers’ Classes?
“The purpose of this course is to enable students whose heritage language is Spanish to develop, maintain, and enhance proficiency in their heritage language by reinforcing and acquiring skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.”
Native-Speakers: Students who are from a country where the target language is spoken and/or taught regularly. They understand the spoken target language, speak it with possible English interference, and may read or write with difficulty.
Near-Native/Heritage Speakers: Students, often first generation Americans, who are exposed to a language other than English at home. They may not speak the language fluently, but they understand it. Enrollment in non-native classes is NOT recommended, as they do not meet the criteria in Florida’s WL, and will be bored. Often, they feel overconfident and actually fail the class due to lack of effort.
